Closing....C.L.O.S.I.N.G

It's a sad day. Spelling Bee is one of my favorite shows. It started as an improv downtown, moved to Off Broadway and then Broadway. I saw it two times and loved it every time.

After three years in New York, two and a half of them on Broadway at the Circle in the Square Theater, “The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee” is closing. The musical, which opened on Broadway on May 2, 2005, after a sold-out engagement Off Broadway at Second Stage Theater, will end its run on Jan. 20. It won two Tony Awards and will have played 121 previews and 1,136 regular performances. . ... Second Stage has announced that Alice Ripley (“Side Show”) and Brian d’Arcy James (“The Apple Tree”) will play the lead roles in “Next to Normal,” a new musical by Tom Kitt and Brian Yorkey starting performances there on Jan. 16.
