We share the same birthday and I have to give his cause a shout. He opened my eyes.

Sometimes we look back on all the atrocities and get stuck in time. Fighting the cause is not about the past but about the present and what the future lies. Building the right attitudes and foundations - evolution rather than destruction.
The struggle has to be an intellectual one - Burma is progressing and the people are recognising the importance of engaging with the world. Ideologies change - maybe that is where I fail to see how we can accomplish anything without seeing realities as what they represent or circumstances through the eyes of the unaffected...is direct intervention our only option?
I believe in reflection but far too many people dwell on the past and let it consume them. The reason why, when people start off such causes, it is all about love and by the time the go through the process it turns to hate.
I guess I am cynical especially when you have Jim Carey representing a cause from afar. I don't see him picketing on the main streets of Burma and the act of throwing money in the name of democracy = conscience cleansing is way way too selfish for me. Change is not a Confessional. Everybody wants something and that is where you begin your negotiations including the Juntas.
I guess I am just tired of people making the situation all so glamarous and note-worthy. Not everyone is unhappy in Burma...poor maybe but not all entirely unhappy. Burma is beautiful country and the people are genuine - give it a few years of westernisation and capitalism...then you wouldn't even recognise it. What price would you pay for a democratic system that will eventually end up being corrupt? The People of Burma need to fight the good eight themselves or they'll never understand the value of freedom and self worth.
Very well said. I feel you on your statement about Jim Carey representing a cause from afar. Lots of times celebrities lend their status to a cause to draw attention to it. I think that's okay.
Americans, these days, look to entertainers and sport figures to inspire them. So, in that respect putting Jim Carey out there is a good way to draw atttention to this cause.
Yes, this is one topic Americans believe, "let people fight their own battles".
